The Box of NYC

The burlesque scene seems to keep holding on, even blossoming in New York. The Box is essentially a variation of a nightclub & dinner theatre with the most amazing acts seen. The vibe is voyeuristic, sexy, & usually something that you can’t explain unless you’ve seen it. Always make a reservation. Get in early, that is before midnight, and better if you have obtained a table, unless you want to see the show from the bar, which is after all further in the back, and when it gets crowded, you will normally catch few of the action going on the scene. As once read : “The best way to sum it up is if Tarantino directed a really effed up version on Moulin Rouge.”

Converted from a derelict 20s sign factory, The Box has been acclaimed to be the city’s sexiest theatre club, featuring circus acts, human oddities and avant-garde performers from across the pond, lighting up the state-of the-art-stage. Initiated by nightlife impresario Serge Becker along with Richard Kimmel, Randy Weiner, and Simon Hammerstein, this is an opulent whim, with a curving staircase draped in Persian rugs, antique bottles (exhumed during construction), jeweled chandeliers, smoke and mirrors, fanciful wallpapers, parquet floors, velvet curtains and N’awlins-style balustrades. Inspired by the Hammerstein Ballroom, this is pure theatrical glamour for the modern age.

The Box consists of a 5,000 square foot, three-level building. The Main Floor is comprised of a bar and an auditorium. The bar has enough standing room, and a good view to the stage, while the upper level has 6 opera-style boxes that circle above the main floor and stage area that offer an excellent view below. According to their brief, the box can cater for private events, with over 200 production numbers for you to choose from.
