Product design is the process
of creating a new product to be sold by a business to its customers. It is the
efficient and effective generation and development of ideas through a process
that leads to new products. In a systematic approach, product designers
conceptualize and evaluate ideas, turning them into tangible products. The
product designer's role is to combine art, science, and technology to create
new products that other people can use. Their evolving role has been
facilitated by digital tools that now allow designers to communicate,
visualize, and analyze ideas in a way that would have taken greater manpower in
the past. Some examples follow :
Ply Laptop Case by Brian
Kelly
This project is an exploration into the process of bending plywood. The
laptop case is formed from two bend panels of plywood which slide along one
another to encase the laptop computer. The case is lined with cork to provide
additional heat resistance and protection.
T.I.M. (Translucence Towering Minimize). A Compositional Calendar
System, where each piece is made out of wood with stencil-cut numbers to denote
the current month and day.
Prototype furniture for
interiors, that uses a minimum amount of space. The hanger can be used with any
fixing on the wall, designed like a ladder. Made of oak, the hanger is
characterized by its straight lines and right angles. The bike frame is
protected by a layer of cork.
Gota by André Lopeseco
Luxemburg, Luxemburg
Kálha is made out of fireclay
material that has very good heat preserving properties, and can be made
locally, with limited cost. The primary function of Kálha is survival as it keeps the body warm when
the user sits on it. When the Kálha is warm enough, the upper part can be
removed and put under the blanket which at night also keeps the body warm.
Apart from this, the Kálha can also be used as a stove: the wood inside burns
for about 30 minutes and after the Kálha stays warm for 1 or 2 hours.
